The Firefighter Leon W. Smith, Jr. Foundation was created in honor of Fire Fighter Smith, who lost his life trying to save victims of the attack on the World Trade Center, on September 11th. Fire Fighter Smith died in the same manner he lived, trying to help others. He valued people and education. The foundation was started to extend a helping hand to those interested in furthering their education but may not be able to cover the cost of some of the incidentals associated with classes.

Since its inception the Foundation has been able to awarded scholarships to over 30 deserving students. The Foundation is able to get this done through donations from members of the general public and New York City Firefighters. Additionally, we host two annual events where we honor firefighters for outstanding achievements within and outside of the fire department as well as individuals who have extended themselves in service to their community.

On behalf of the board of the Leon W. Smith, Jr. Foundation we invite you to explore the website to learn more about the foundation, access applications for scholarships and get more information about our annual events. We also encourage you to consider making a tax deductible donation and attending the one or both of our events. Your financial support will allow us to continue to provide scholarships for students who need assistance.

To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, an investment in our children’s education pays the best interest.

Thank you.
